Progression of Skills

Using the Content Domains set out in the National Curriculum for Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, we have devised a progression of skills in reading to allow children to develop a foundation of skills that can be built up on year on year to create confident, fluent and reflective readers throughout their time at Blakehill and onwards.

At Blakehill we focus on three areas of reading: decoding, fluency and comprehension. Our readers are developed through the implementation our early reading code, which then progresses to our further reading code. Pupils across school are taught to use strategies to help them decode and read with fluency. These skills are built upon from reception all the way through to Year 6. These practices are underpinned by the teaching undertaken in phonics through the use of the accredited scheme: Pearsons Phonics Bug.
