Parental Involvement

Every parent, guardian and carer can 'do their bit' to help inspire their child to develop the confidence they need to succeed in Mathematics, for example by:

- helping them practice their times tables and Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs). These can be found under the 'Key Instant Recall Facts' tab and on your child's class page.

- attending one of our Mathematics workshops to see how your child learns to approach Mathematics, picking up some tips and hopefully having some fun along the way!

- showing your child that you like the subject, giving them the confidence they need to enjoy it too.

- going shopping, allowing your child to experience using coins, paying bills and calculating change.

- allowing your child to play Mathematics games at home. Imaginary and real life practice such as Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, Battleships, Top Trumps really helps children to understand how to estimate measures and apply their knowledge.

- teaching your child how to tell the time for example: What time is the TV programme on? When does it finish? How long is it on for? Reading bus and train timetables.

Times Tables

Children learning and understanding their times tables are very important, both in the classroom and the 'real' world. At Blakehill Primary School, we strive to ensure that all children know all of their times tables as well as their corresponding division facts.

The National Curriculum states that children should know their times tables by the end of Year 4 and in June 2021 their will be a formal 'check' of this (similar to the phonics check in Year 1). We will be helping the children in Year 4 develop their recall of these facts in a number of ways, both in school and at home! Children will be rewarded with certificates and badges for their achievements at all stages whilst there will also be fun competitions and challenges from time to time - particularly making use of TT Rockstars which all children have login details for. However, beyond this, we expect all children at Blakehill, including those in Years 5 and 6, to revise and confidently use their times tables, ready for secondary school.

For more information, please select the 'Year 4 Multiplication Check' tab on the right hand side.

Expectations

Year 1 - Count in 2s, 5s, & 10s.
Year 2 - Know 2x, 5x, 10x table facts and corresponding divisions.
Year 3 - Know 3x, 4x & 8x table facts and corresponding divisions.
Year 4 - Know ALL times tables up to 12 x 12 and corresponding divisions facts.
