Outdoor P.E
LO: To be able to confidently retrieve the ball in different ways with the help of feedback from my peers.
In our PE lesson we looked at many things that is involved with sending and receiving an object, this included how we pass, our coordination, and the positioning of our hands and feet. We played some mini games that very challenging for us, this meant we could receive feedback off our peers on our strengths and our areas for improvement to better our success when sending and receiving.
Maths
LO: To count sides of 2-D shapes.
LO: To count vertices on 2-D shapes.
This week 2P have been introduced to a new strand in the maths curriculum - shape! Today we have consolidated our knowledge of 2-D shapes by using straws to build different shapes. Once we built each shape we counted the sides and vertices and discussed this with out partner. Practical maths is the best to help us secure our understanding.

Spelling
LO: Alternate g.
This week in our spelling lessons we have been focusing on the alternate g sound. This means that in some words, the word sounds with a letter j but is spelt with the letter g. For example, magic, giant, giraffe and age. We enjoying competing against one another to consolidate our knowledge. Our favourite game is connect 4 because we are able to apply our new spelling rules and race against one another to get 4 words in a row spelt accurately.
Music
How does music make the world a better place?
In music for this half-term our big question is 'How does music make our world a better place?'. We kick started our learning today by thinking about how we can celebrate a wide range of musical styles. We listened to the song 'rainbows' and found a steady beat. We discussed the rhythm patters and thought about if they were long or short. After singing and performing the song, we applied this knowledge to play and produce some notes from the song on the glockenspiels. Following this song we focused on the C, D and E notes so that the glockenspiel was in time and tune with the beat.
Please have a listen to some of our wonderful performances!
2P are so talented.
Science
Use of materials.
LO: To find out if an object can squash, bend, twist and stretch.
Recently in science we have been exploring the uses and properties of everyday materials! In this lesson we evaluated what items are irreversible and reversible. We created a table in our books and decided if each material could squash, stretch and bend. After this, we decided to apply our results from our table to create a pipe cleaner model. Have a look at our fantastic creations.

Verb Charades!
This week in 2M we have been learning all about verbs. In groups we thought about lots of different actions and doing words. After our discussion we wrote down a variety of verbs on post it notes. Then we came together as a class to act out these verbs in front of the class. We took it in turns to read the post it notes and perform these actions to our peers. We had so much fun learning about verbs through playing this game. Please enjoy watching us in action below!
Punjabi Roots
This morning we had an assembly to welcome Punjabi Roots to Blakehill. Harveen's dad and his team from Punjabi Roots Academy delivered a fantastic Bhangra dancing workshop to the children in Year two. Bhangra is a celebratory folk dance that welcomes the coming of spring. 2M had lots of fun learning the moves and putting them to music. What a lovely way to celebrate different cultures!

The Great Fire of London Workshop
Today the children in Year 2 took part in an amazing workshop with Sir William Petty. 2M learnt lots of historical facts about 'The Great Fire of London' and had many questions to ask during the day. The children took part in experiments to understand how the fire spread. The children developed fantastic understanding of the event. This hook into our learning will help us transfer our knowledge into independent writing tasks!
Wow look at the different workshop activities that we took part in today! We worked together to create our own map of London. We thought carefully about our street names and buildings. Once we had finished our section of the map we fit the pieces together to create a huge map of London that was just like a jigsaw puzzle. After this Sir William Petty stood still so that we could sketch him and create our own portraits.

LO: To make the same amount.
Today in our maths lesson we consolidated our learning by using part-whole models to create the same amount of money in more than one way. We focused on pounds and pence to create our final amount. This is a tricky concept so we made our learning practical by using real money and the part-whole models to figure out different ways of using coins to make the same amount.
English - Grammar and Punctuation
LO: To know when to double the consonant when adding the suffix-ed.
Today in 2M we have learnt the 1:1:1 rule to help us understand when we need to double the consonant before adding the suffix - ed. The children explored the use of syllables, vowels and constants and how they impact on the spellings of words. For example, hop becomes hopped when adding the suffix - ed. We loved competing against one another to apply the 1:1:1 rule to different words.
Indoor PE
L.O: To be able to demonstrate accuracy with a variety of objects.
L.O: To display good sportsmanship and teamwork in a competition environment.
In PE we played a variety games to practice for our upcoming competition, this included playing a variety of sports/games such as Football, Hockey, Cone dash and retrieve and throw relays. This helped us improve our accuracy as there was always a target we had to aim for so we could score points for our team.

Dogs Trust Workshop
LO: To know how to follow simple instructions to keep me safe.
Today 2M had a visit from the Dogs Trust charity. Throughout this workshop we were learning about how keep dogs safe and how to act safely around dogs. The people leading the workshop taught us about the five happy dog rules that we can follow and apply to keep ourselves and others safe. These rules revolved around how we can appropriately interact with a dog when they are resting, eating and playing. We also developed our understanding of making noise around dogs and how we can show a dog love.

Speaking and Listening
LO: To listen and respond appropriately
LO: To participate actively in collaborative conversations
The children in 2M took part in an exciting lesson and pretended to be Samuel Pepys. They took it in turns to role play and answer questions from their friends. They were fantastic at getting into character and really thought about Mr Pepy's personality too. The children began to understand what life was like for people living through The Great Fire of London in the busy city.
Art
LO: To use painting to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.
LO: To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape form and space.
This afternoon we thoroughly enjoyed painting the skyline of London during The Great Fire! We used a mixture of red, yellow and orange paint to create an effective scene. We thought hard about blending the colours so that the skyline looked seamless. We used little amounts of water so that the colour was bold. These pieces of art look fabulous on our display board in the classroom. We are very proud of our creations.

Mechanisms - Wheeled Toy
LO:
- To design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria.
- Select from and use a wide range of materials and components.
- Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger stiffer and more stable.
- Explore and use mechanisms for example, wheels and axles.
This term we have been working towards creating our own wheeled toy. First, we designed our toy by thinking about the suitability of materials and how we can join the body to the wheels. Then, we explored fixing wheels to our models by cutting and sticking a variety of items to test how secure they are and how far the will role. Lastly, we created our models and tested them with our peers. Have a look at our fantastic creations!

The Great Fire of London - Home Learning Project Winners!
We are so proud of the children in Year 2 for immersing themselves into the home learning project this half term. The optional home learning task was to take part in the Blakehill Blake Off. We asked the children to create and bake their own bread inspired by The Great Fire of London. The children came up with some wonderful creations, which the adults in Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed tasting! Well done children you are so imaginative.

Poetry - Really Looking
This week in Year 2 we have been exploring poetry through our English curriculum. Linking to our history topic on The Great Fire of London, we have been looking at poems relating to fire. We used our senses to understand fire and how it moves and spreads. To embed this learning, we examined a variety of different fire poems. We used this knowledge to create our own fire poems with our groups. We then had the opportunity to perform our poems to the rest of the class!

Zones of Relevance
To embed our understanding of fire, we discussed and explored a range of adjectives. As a class we had to justify and identify whether these adjectives accurately describe fire or if they have no relevance to the subject. Next, we put these words into the correct zones. For example, cold would be put into the red zone as it does not link to or accurately describe fire and how it moves.

Computing
LO: To create a pictogram and enter the data.
This half term we have been learning about data and information. The children in 2M have been building up to inputting information into the computer in the form of a pictogram. We thought about the importance of effective data collection and we considered the benefits of different data collection methods: why, for example, we would use a pictogram to display the data collected. The children collected the data to create a tally chart and use this to make a pictogram on a computer. The children compared their results and explained what their finished pictogram shows.
