Design Technology
We designed, built and evaluated Greek buildings made from recycled materials. We looked at a range of designs and planned our buildings by incorporating the columns (doric, ionic and corinthian) used by the Ancient Greeks.
Science
We have been learning about Earth and Space. We have learnt:
- The Sun, Earth and Moon are approximately spherical.
- The Sun is a star and it is at the centre of our solar system.
- As the Earth rotates, the Sun appears to move across the sky.
- The Moon orbits the Earth- It takes about 28 days to complete its orbit
- There are 8 planets: Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Mars, Uranus, Neptune.
- These travel around the Sun in fixed orbits.
- Earth takes 365¼ days to complete its orbit around the Sun.
- The Earth rotates (spins) on its axis every 24 hours.
- As Earth rotates half faces the Sun (day) and half is facing away from the Sun (night).
RE
Nothing beats a sunny day and in 5J we took full advantage by working outside. Our objective for this lesson was to create a job advert for a Messiah to spread the word of Christianity.
Some great adverts were created!
Computing - Vector drawings using Google draw
We have been creating different images and characters using Google drawings. This has required a lot of focus and patience!
In doing so, we have created a penguin, parrot, frog, flowers and a robot.
PHSE - Healthy Relationships - Police Visit
Bradford City and West Yorkshire Police visited Year 5 to talk about healthy relationships. They discussed the importance of establishing healthy relationships and what makes relationships unhealthy. The children were informed about how to handle situations and relationships in appropriate ways.
Science - Separating Materials
We planned a fair test and discussed the variables that would change and/or stay the same. Our investigation was to plan if a substance was soluble or insoluble. The children mixed a range of products including, gravy granules, sugar, custard powder, salt, candy floss and rice into water.
They recorded their results once they had completed the investigation. We then monitored the substances over a period of a week to find out more on what happens and how the mixtures break down.
Design Technology - Food Road Show
In preparation for healthy eating week, we had a visit from Ben from the Food Road Show. The whole school was involved in learning about the importance of healthy eating and making the right choices when planning a meal.
The Red Chilli and The Green Peas teams put on a show by using fresh ingredients to cook the best balanced healthy meal in just 15 minutes.
The experience was enjoyed by all, especially those children who got to have a taste of the meal!
History - Anglos Saxon Workshop
WE covered many of our History objectives when we had a special visitor come into school to deliver a Anglo Saxon workshop. The children enjoyed listening to stories, re-enacting a battle, being part of The Witan and playing board games. the objectives we covered were:
- The start of the Anglo-Saxons
- The end of Roman rule
- Settlements
- Religion
- Anglo Saxon Runes
- End of the Anglo-Saxon Rule
