Autumn Term

Spellings - ay / a_e /a/ ai/ eigh

The children loved looking at all the alternate ways of making 'ai' sound. They concentrated really hard and explored the different spellings patterns. They played a 'clear the board' to embed their learning.
English - Hot seating
LO: To use the personal pronoun 'I'
Speaking and Listening
LO: To listen and respond appropriately
LO: To participate actively in collaborative conversations

Today the children in 2P took part in an exciting lesson and pretended to be Flat Stanley. They took it in turns to role play and answer questions from their friends. They were fantastic at getting into character and really thought about Stanley's personality too.
Science - Living Things
LO: To explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive.

Children were very eagle-eyed today and went on a hunt around the school grounds in search for living things! They turned over logs, looked through tunnels, examined leaves and trees around them  too! They made a list on their whiteboards ready to discuss back in class.
Maths - Place Value
LO: To flexibly partition numbers to 100.

In Maths 2P have been learning about place value. Overs the past week they have been exploring the value of numbers looked closely at tens and ones using lots of different resources to help them. We explored tens and ones.

Today, children dug deeper with their learning and explored different ways of presenting a number using tens and ones. The base then was a great resource for the children to use and explore alternate ways.
Computing

LO: To identify information technology beyond school

In our computing lessons we have begun to explore IT in environments beyond school, including home and familiar places such as shops. As a class we have discussed the uses of IT in these environments and have explained that IT is used in many workplaces.

In 2P we can now:

  • Find examples of information technology
  • Sort IT by where it is found
  • Talk about uses of information technology

Art - Sketching
LO: To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

In Art, the children have been researching about David Hockney with Mrs Marsden. They have learnt interesting facts and had a go at sketching him too.
Singing with Miss Dunn

2P had a wonderful singing session this morning. The children absolutely loved their first lesson with Miss Dunn! They had lots of fun using their voices!
PSHE - Me and My Relationships
LO: To use a range of words to describe emotions

Today in our PSHE lesson we understood that there is a normal range of emotions (e.g. happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, nervousness) and scale of emotions that all humans experience in relation to different experiences and situations. The children began to recognise and talk about their emotions, including having a varied vocabulary of words to use when talking about their own and others' feelings. It was interesting to see that even with the same feelings card, everyone has different ways of showing their feelings. We then took this knowledge to our books and we shared our ideas of how we can be aware of when someone is feeling sad, happy, excited or angry and how we can best support one another!
English - Mary Seacole
LO: To make inferences about a character: Mary Seacole.

As part of our Black History topic we have been learning all about Mary Seacole. Transferring our knowledge into our English lessons, we thought about how Mary was feeling at different points in the story. This encouraged us to sequence Mary's life and understand the significance of her career as a nurse. 2P explored a range of feelings that they could use to identify and describe Mary and her thoughts for each picture.
Library Time!

Every Monday afternoon 2P visit the Library to exchange our current reading book for a new one. We love to share a story with our friends and teachers or choose a new class read to focus on. Miss Preston has taught us how the Library is managed and how we return books and find the genre of book we would like to read next.
History
Saltaire - Educational Visit
LO: To describe significant people from the past (Titus Salt).
How did Titus Salt make people’s lives better?

Today 2P have had a wonderful day in Saltaire! As part of our local history topic we are learning all about the life of a significant person. This significant person is Titus Salt. 2P were immersed in the workshop and activities throughout the day and the children will now be able to tell you lots of interesting facts about Titus Salt and Saltaire. Did you know that women worked in the mill for 10 hours a day and men worked for 12 hours a day?
Obstacle Course Fun!

This morning 2P took part in the obstacle course! We had to use our balancing and coordination skills to help us achieve e each challenge. We had lots of fun and enjoyed completing each activity. As a class, we persevered and were resilient even when we found something challenging.
History
LO: To use a range of sources to create a map of Saltaire.

During our History lessons this week we have been using a range of sources to create our own map of Saltaire. We have applied our knowledge of the village and buildings that were first established by Titus Salt to make our maps accurate and specific to the Victorian time period. We used back pens to identify and label the street names and locations of buildings!
This map was our inspiration and primary resource that enabled us to create our own view of Saltaire!
Maths
LO: To add by making 10.

Recently in maths we have started our new block of learning. We are focusing on addition and subtraction. Today we have built upon our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help us answer addition number sentences. First we find the number bond that matches to make 10. Then we count on from 10 to find our answer to the original question. Here are some examples of our amazing work!
Can you solve these number sentences?
Use the addition by making 10 method to secure your understanding of bonds to 10.
History
Weaving Activity
LO: To know what it was like to make cloth before the Industrial Revolution.

Today 2P have been learning the skill of weaving material to understand what it was like to make cloth during the time of Titus Salt. We used two types of coloured card to weave under and over one another to create a lattice style. The children loved being hands on with their learning of the our local history topic!
Spellings
 LO: Homophones

This week in our spelling lessons we have been learning all about homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. For example, see and sea. The children have been practising spelling these words and putting them correctly into sentences. Today we played the connect 4 game to embed our learning. With our partner we took it in turns to look, say, cover and write the homophone in our jotters.
Maths - Addition and Subtraction
LO: To subtract across a 10.

This half-term we have been focusing on addition and subtraction as part of our maths curriculum. This week we have been learning how to subtract a number across a 10. To secure our understanding of this tricky concept we have been using concrete resources and a variety of pictorial representations to draw our answers. In this lesson we were using tens frames to find the answer to our subtractions! Here is an example of how we can use tens frames to support us to find the answer to a subtraction sum.
Science - Use of Materials
LO: To identify common materials.

This week in science we have introduced a new topic. Our focus in science for this half-term is the use of materials. To begin this strand of learning, we explored and identified a variety of materials and their purpose. As a class, we discussed and manipulated classroom objects to explain their uses and types of material. For instance, we identified that a ruler is used for measuring and it is made out plastic. Here we are recording our findings in our topic books using key vocabulary such as: material, properties, purpose, wood, metal, paper and felt.
KS1 Nativity

This week KS1 have had their Nativity performances! We have worked really hard to understand the classic Nativity story and apply this to The Bethlehem Bake Off production. All of the adults were proud of us and enjoyed seeing us in our costumes.
