Welcome

Welcome to 3R!
It is so lovely to be together as we move into Key Stage 2!
Let us introduce you to Maya, our Class Councillor and let us help you with some our class routines and procedures.

Our School Day:
We begin learning at 8.40 am so it is important that your child is promptly in school and ready to begin their day.

Our school day ends at 3.10 pm. Please bear with us at this time as we try to help the children remember everything they need, get to after school clubs or out to you. If your child is being collected by a different adult or going to an after school club, we would be grateful if you would let us know. Thank you so much.

Water Bottles:
Please ensure your child brings a non spill water bottle to school every day. This is important so that we can help them remain healthy and hydrated throughout the day. Being hydrated is so important to helping your child be able to focus and learn.

Snacks:
Your child can bring in a healthy snack such as fruit or fruit bar for morning break.

Uniform:
Please ensure your child has the correct school uniform including black school shoes. If your child comes to school wearing trainers, we will provide them with pumps to wear for the day. From Year 3 onwards, your child will need to wear a tie for school, this can be elastic or the traditional knot tie. We will help your child to become familiar with wearing it under their collar. Please could you make sure that all uniform, especially jumpers are named. We try our hardest to keep your child's jumper with them but this can be difficult on hot days if they are unnamed.

PE:
Indoor PE: this takes place on a Wednesday morning. It is important that children have the correct, named kit for this: a white or blue plain t-shirt; black or blue shorts (tracksuit bottoms are also permitted) and black pumps.

Outdoor PE: this takes place on a Monday afternoon. It is important that children have the correct, named kit for this: a white or blue plain t-shirt; black or blue tracksuit bottoms; a plain black or blue sweatshirt and a pair of trainers.

Mr Simmons, our Sports Coach, will lead one session and Mrs Roberts will lead the other.

Again, please ensure that all PE kit is named. Children get changed together and so kit can be easily confused if not labelled.

Home Learning:

Home Reading

In Year 3 children are given daily opportunities to change their reading books as soon as they arrive in school. Children will be nurtured to independently change these and add a sticker to their home reading reward chart. We have recently updated the selection of books we have on offer, particularly for Year 3.

It is really important that your child reads at least three times a week at home. This is because your Year 3 child is still developing crucial fluency, expression and text understanding skills which they need regular support and guidance with.

We understand that parents/carers live busy lives but any time you can spare to listen to your child read really would be extremely beneficial.

The question stems below are in the front of your child's home reading record and these are to help you develop your child's text understanding.

Homework will include daily reading alongside weekly spellings, Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) and Times Table practise. A copy of each half term's KIRFs can be found below (these will be uploaded over the course of the year). We will provide you with activities to support you with this, typically on a Friday. The homework provided is to support and consolidate pupils’ learning from that week or a previous week. It is used to check understanding of topics covered and helps us identify areas of learning that need further development. If your child needs extra support with their homework, please contact a member of the Year 3 team via the school office.

Spellings

Spellings will be handed out to pupils on a Friday and tested the following Friday. Spellings will cover spelling rules and statutory words as outlined in the National Curriculum. You will be advised of this rule when spellings are given each week and we will do our best to help you with resources for these. It is important that pupils are learning their spellings and we ask that you support your child with this. Pupil’s spelling is taken into account when an overall judgement is given for writing.
